Jemma Calloway has a deep, dark secret. Growing up, her father was a monster who violated her in the worst possible ways. Her mother was a monster of a different variety – the kind that knows wrongs are being done but they do nothing to stop it. Jemma’s childhood was full of heartache and hurt at the hands of the two people who she should have been able to rely on to keep her safe and protected. She made no friends because she was frightened of what her father might do to them. It all came to a head one day when Jemma was sixteen. If she thought things in her family home couldn’t get worse, she was wrong. For Travis Steele, Jemma has been under his skin since the first time he seen her behind the counter at the boutique his sister owns with her best friend. Long, black curly hair, beautiful body and her smile, when she shows it, could be described as nothing but glamorous. Travis knows Jemma is hiding something. A private pain he could never begin to imagine. Still, he makes it his mission to clear the darkness from her beautiful eyes so they only shine light. After being hurt her whole life, after never being able to trust no one but herself, will Jemma lower her walls enough for Travis to get inside? Will Travis be able to pull her out from under her father’s control? Jemma needs a safe haven and according to Travis, he’s it. But will he be able to convince her? Due to the nature of this book, it is recommended the reader be over 18 years of age.

(WARNING: This novel is SUPER graphic in regards to sexual abuse to children and women).
Here we go....one of my favorite types or reads (excluding excerpt from above):
strong alpha who grunts responses: CHECK
damaged heroine who isn't annoying: CHECK
man that knows what he wants and doesn't waiver: CHECK
fun friends that add greatness to the story: CHECK
HOTTT SEX: (in high opera like singsong)CHECK MATEYYYY!
Whew this story had it all. If you love Kristen Ashley you will enjoy this read. The author writes ALOT like Kristen Ashley....you can tell she probably is as in love with her as we all are. Great read, totally recommend. Why not 5 stars you ask? Maybe it was too much like Kristen Ashley...I wanted it to get a little more dangerous, like my KA does..have a little more UMPHHH to it. I mean, I can't reiterate enough how much like KA this author writing style is, from the darlings, honeys, mamas and grunts....love it. Although our sweet heroine has been through enough so maybe that's why the author let her off the hook early enough and without too much more s*** to go through. Can't be too upset about that.
I just love a good damsel in distress story.

Emerald Steele Investigations Volume 2 Kasey Millstead Books Reviews

This book was a decent read. My first by this author so I didn't know what to expect. Travis Steele is my kinda man! The upside is good character development and an interesting backstory. Downsides - the typos and awkward grammar were a distraction. Lots of indicators the author may not be American...I've only heard pie called slice in Europe. I would read something else from this author.
I absolutely loved this book, what jemma went through and how she persevered was a miracle. I enjoyed all her friends Tom, Rae, Kami, Will, Elliot. Grant and Judy were terrific parents. Last but not least Travis what a swoon-worthy man. This is what every man should strive to be like. So happy she got her HEA.
Casey writes a man to be dominate like no one else I have read. There is no meanness, hate or anger in her men. They are just naturally dominate. The way she writes the scene where Jemma has finally found her safe haven and can let Travis know what has happened to her in her life is amazing. She does not feel exposed but left feeling the worth he sees in her. This series is wonderful. Rea was the best start with Sapphire and just set the mood for a great series.
I just finished Emerald. This story was amazing! I don't know why no one is mentioning in their reviews the insanely horrific things that happened. I don't think this is your typical love story given those issues. I loved the characters - especially Travis. As far as saying that Kasey writes like Kristen Ashley - I couldn't think of a better compliment! No the book was not perfect - but the story was amazing and it made me feel so many different emotions as I read it. I look forward to reading more from Kasey!
The story was ok, typical alpha male sees the girl of his dreams and worms his way into her life, whether she wants it or not. The writing wasn't as crisp as I'm used to from other authors I enjoy with the same type of storyline, but the book was still enjoyable. It actually got me hooked on Lady Antebellum because they talk about songs in the story and I was curious about them. It does remind me of a Kristen Ashley story idea though.
If you like the happily ever after, you'll like this book. it's your typical main character has a bad past and the other main character loves them in spite of themselves. I love happy endings. I might have given this one 4 stars except for a couple of things. One I am a stickler for typos. One or two is acceptable, I know it's hard to catch them all. But when the story is filled with them, it totally detracts from the story. Two if you are a non-American writing a story set in America, please use American terms. I have read enough books written by non-Americans that I can figure out what they are referring to. The bench is the table, etc. If the lead character had been from another country and was using that terminology, it would be one thing. But when the main character is from Texas, I just couldn't get past it. If those types of things don't bother you, please read it. The story is good.
I thought this story had potential, but to me it felt incomplete. I never got a real emotional connecction to the characters. With everything that the h went through I want to feel bad, sad and then happy when she gets her HEA. Instead the h issues felt glossed over. As for the H all I was told was that he was this major bada$$. I never truly figured out why he was.
I felt like she was mirroring Kristen Ashely for her H. (he's a bada$$, alpha PI, who's vocabulary consists of yeah, calls her mama, babe, and there are a lot of you get me's) i also thought she was mirroring E.L. James with her h and her sub-conscience. These where not bad things unless you've read these other authors. I couldn't help comparing and I felt that Kasey Millstead fell short in her story.
Overall the story had potential unfortunately it missed.
There were some grammatical errors. I know they bother some. They didn't bother me.
Would I recommend it? No, not over the other authors.
Would I keep it and read it again? No
Cliffhanger ending? No
